The basics
What is modern air conditioning?
A modern split air conditioner is really an air-to-air heat pump. Instead of making heat or cold, it moves heat: out of your room in summer, and in from the outside air in winter. So one system cools in summer and heats in winter.
Cools and heats
Switch between cooling on hot summer days and heating through autumn and winter, from the same indoor unit.
About 1kW in, 3kW out
Because it moves heat rather than making it, roughly 1kW of electricity gives around 3kW of heating or cooling, often more. The exact figure depends on the unit and the weather.
Takes moisture out
In cooling and dry mode it pulls water out of the air, which helps with damp, musty rooms and condensation. Dry mode can be used all year round.
Quiet
Indoor units are designed to run quietly, so they suit bedrooms and home offices.
Inverter control
The compressor speeds up and slows down to hold the temperature you set, rather than switching hard on and off.
Filters and app control
Built-in filters catch dust in the air passing through, and many models can be set from your phone.
Good to know: heating mode warms the air without adding moisture to it. Features vary by make and model, and we'll talk you through the options at your survey.
Air conditioning
Single split AC units fitted from £1,795
A single split is the simplest home air con: one indoor unit on the wall, linked to one outdoor unit outside. It cools and heats one room, such as a bedroom, living room or home office.
- One indoor unit + one outdoor unit
- Cools in summer, heats in winter
- Quiet, controlled by remote or app
Final price depends on your home and the install, confirmed in writing after a site survey.

- Fast, room-by-room heating, controlled from a remote or app
- Cooling and dehumidifying in summer from the same unit
- A useful option for rooms the central heating doesn't reach
- We'll talk you through running costs and options at the survey

Official grant amounts (GOV.UK)Air-to-air heat pumps
£2,500

Your home must also have low-carbon hot water heating, and the system must be able to heat your whole home.
Official notice (GOV.UK)Who can get it
- You own the property, in England or Wales.
- You're replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, such as gas, oil, LPG or electric heaters.
- The heat pump is installed by an MCS certified installer, who applies for you. The grant comes off your quote.
- Not for most new builds, social housing, or homes that already had government funding for a heat pump.
- Your EPC isn't a requirement, but better insulation helps a heat pump work well.

FAQ
Common questions
Can air conditioning heat my home too?
Yes. Most modern split systems are air-to-air heat pumps, so the same unit can heat in winter and cool in summer.
Do I need planning permission?
Many homes can fit an outdoor unit under permitted development, but there are conditions, and listed buildings or conservation areas may differ. We'll flag anything to check at the survey.
How long does an installation take?
It depends on the system and your home. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote.
How often should air con be serviced?
Manufacturers usually recommend at least once a year to keep it efficient and protect any warranty. See our annual service contract.
Is it noisy?
Modern indoor units are quiet, and we'll plan the outdoor unit's position with you and your neighbours in mind.
Do you service systems you didn't fit?
Usually, yes. Call us with the make and model and we'll let you know.
